Every student in Alberta writes 4 common exams- Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.  The test are are not well likes by the teachers. Although the tests are written for one purpose, the results are used to compare schools and districts and that upset some people.  In Calgary for example, schools in the lower social economic areas never do well on the test.  The results get published in the paper.  We are fortunate - our school does well in all 4 area so we are seen as one of the top academinc schools in Calgary.

They also have tug of war to win more points for classes.

My school is one of the biggest in Calgary and it has the best technology. We have really good sport teams and we have a wrestling meet that is the biggest in Western Canada. Our school offers a lot of sports such as volleyball, basketball, wrestling, soccer, track and field... there are more.

Mr. Baines ( 1901-1994 ) was a curator of the Calgary Zoo from 1929-1964 and worked extensively with the Boy Scouts program in Calgary from 1968-1990. He visited most Calgary and District Schools, where over a million students were introduced to his gimmick bag, and his snake Agnes.

The Tom Baines School students have an annual Multicultural Fair in March. All the grade 7 students prepare a project on a different country around the world. They have to research economic and social aspects of their country and then put together a display to show off that evening along with a snack that would be eaten in that country. There are usually 74 countries represented - Russia is one of them.
