Population

The population of Canada is only 30.3 million people (data of 1997). The population is distributed in a narrow band along the border on the USA, which is 6,000 km long and only 160 km wide.

In 1991-96 the Canadian population was increasing on 1,1% annually, that was the highest rate of all the Great Seven countries. This was due to immigration and natural increment of population (number of newborn minus number of dead). Canadian population consists about 0,5% of the world population. According to scientific accounts there will be 36.6 million people in Canada in 2026.

The majority of the population (76,6%) live in cities and towns and only 23,4% - in the country. According to the latest census 31% of Canadians (8.61 million people) inhabit three largest cities of the country - Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

As the statistics say, the average number of people in a Canadian family is 3.1 and 1.3 of them are children. This size of an average family in Canada has not been changing since 1991.
